I would have to drive 10 or 20 miles to get to a farm, I'm guessing. Still, I am positive I can get rocks cheaper than at the plant nursery, if I just keep looking.

We want to replace the imitation slate floor in the foyer with real slate, there is a company in Vermont that sells it in mixed colors, green, grey, and red, that I've seen floors done in, and it's very nice, a box of mixed size tiles, 10 sq. ft. is about $12 a box locally. That's considerably cheaper than wood, and would be more suitable for an entryway.

Still, my first priority ought to be putting in trees, as they grow slowly, and can be growing while I give my attention to other things.
