The ancient Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans believed that their gods were the real thing. Ask any archaeologist today- their religions are in the dust. Today Christians, Jews, and Muslims insist that they have the true way. I suspect that in a few thousand years, these religions might join the fate of their ancient counterparts. As per the Bible, most of it is not based on historical fact. Fictitious stories and symbolism permeate its pages. Facts are important. At least the scientific method strives for truth. Oh, poor Gailileo.
