New Chip Set Promises To Cut DBS Set-Box Prices In Half

June 4, 1996

LSI Logic Corp. began active marketing in Japan of a chip set which the company said can cut in half the price of set-top
boxes used to receive digital broadcast satellite signals.

The chip set, the Integra, is aimed at Japanese electronics companies designing set-top boxes for various satellite broadcast
service providers.

The Integra architecture is based on open-industry standards, including JSAT, the Japanese standard for video broadcast. The
chip set comprises of a channel decoder IC, a transport chip to analyze user fees and other encoded information, and an
MPEG-2 decoder IC.

The boxes now cost 60,000 to 70,000 yen. But the Integra chip set, which itself markets for around 7,500 yen in large-lot
orders, allows makers to keep the overall cost around 30,000 yen for the end-user. LSI Logic aims to reap sales of 15 billion
yen in 1998 with the chip set in Japan
