So, is the premise is to time some trades in the best stocks in the best industries

You're begining to sound more like a trader >gg<.

I've actually read somewhere that if you are in the hot sector each year and ride out the ups & downs, you'll get a better return that market timing the S&P500 (only riding the uptrends) although I can't remember exactly what the return was.
