I'm sure you've thot of this, but depending on how long you want to hold your short, something I like to do is to use options for a synthetic short (short call, long put, strike near stock for near 0 net). Did it this morning on a stock I wanted to box (my broker won't allow long + short in same acct).
You may pay more commissions and spread, but at least you always have the 'short' available.
just an idea.

(perhaps that's an omen... that many shorts... rally time)
