(COMTEX) B: Plane Hits Van at Heathrow
B: Plane Hits Van at Heathrow

LONDON, Oct 11, 1999 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- American Airlines said
Monday that it is investigating how one of its planes hit a van while
taxiing to a landing slot at London's Heathrow Airport.

No one was injured in the Sunday morning incident, which involved a
plane from Miami with 221 passengers on board.

The right engine of Flight AA56 hit the van as the McDonnell Douglas
MD11 aircraft maneuvered to the landing slot under a self-navigating
guidance system, airline spokeswoman Louise Phelps said.

The Ford Transit van was pushed about 6 feet and dented.

The self-navigation system is routinely used at Heathrow.
