Maverick! What I see here is a failure to communicate!

First of all, Tag Switching is a proprietary violation of switching standards that Cisco is trying to impose on the non-routing sectors as the defacto standard. It is slower for one, because it requires the switch to look deeper into a packet for additional addressing information than would normally be required in a standards-based switching solution.

From here the customer must look into the next scenario, "Why do I route internally when I can execute a safe fast transaction internally with much less overhead.

Looking at the numbers that you provided in your table it appears that a 21% Cabletron SFS share with an 8% Ipsilon share produces a nice 29% starting point for IP Switching since both SFS and IP are additive!

Next we can look at Router Core vs Switch core. Since a router core usually depends on one or two central processors (no matter how fast!) it appears to be a bottleneck particularly compared to switches which are truly scaleable. Using this comparision, why would Cisco be pushing a central routing system with switches along the edge vs a switched core with routers along the firewalled unless it was designed to protect against market erosion?

Tell me, does Cisco's future routing product "BFR" stand for Big Fast Router or Bring Forth Revenue? I for one feel that a customer routes when necessary and switches and/or bridges everywhere else! Of course, if they have deep pockets or listen to marketing hype they simply reach for their pockets when they should be grabbing their ankles!

Thanks for your time.
