VirtualFind no find yet but High Speed Access ready to take off
Steve, What do you think about High Speed Access (HSAC) and Broadcom (BRCM) for the next year? Thanks!
=>reply: I remain a fan of High Speed Access Corp. (HSAC) as a possible "@Home in the making." What drew me in way back, originally in summer 1998, was Paul Allen's investment. Since 1995, when Paul wanted to acquire AOL, I've followed and analyzed Vulcan Ventures' moves, wondering how long it would be before Paul pieced together an AOL-like vehicle - only better. Since he has the capital to do so, Paul has assembled quite a portfolio of Internet companies that put various features into what I always believed (and still do) could be a Wired World Inc.
In fact, the news Oct. 7 has Paul (through Vulcan) investing $1.65 billion in the telecom firm RCN. Pieced together with HSAC, Go2Net and Charter Communications (scheduled for IPO) I think we may have a Wired World on Wall Street with this group. The line up: Cable/high-speed infrastructure: Charter Telco/high-speed data: RCN High-speed Internet service: HSAC Portal front end: Go2Net (GNET) Wireless Internet: Metricom (MCOM) And you begin to have the broad strokes for what I think is a meaningful Internet suite.

Steve, I'm one of those that followed your GNET tip in January - wow! How will it continue from here? (The chart doesn't look so hot). I follow your recommendations very carefully.
=>reply: When I put Go2Net (GNET) on my watch list for 1999, the stock was under $10 per share (split adjusted). It's been as high as $99.50 per share since then and closed Oct. 8 at $66. Charts are useful but not indicative of anything other than history. Go2Net has been aggressive in the Net space, moving into the top 10 this year in users/traffic. I think HyperMart is probably one of its biggest untapped - and certainly unrecognized - assets. Silicon Investor has received some awareness in the past 12 months also. I think Go2Net is building on its success so far and has an array of assets to do so, with Paul Allen also a major shareholder. (See above for how I think that plays out). |
