Hi Sans Warning this is a long post.
I thought I would repost this as it fits my theory regarding something new.I don't know how to imbed a link into a message so I had to paste the whole release.

Research In Motion Announces New Embedded Wireless Modems for Mobile Computing Market
Advancements In Size, Weight and Power Management Will Enable Broader Applications Including Portable Computing Devices
NEW ORLEANS, LA, Sept. 22 /CNW-PRN/ - Research In Motion Limited (NASDAQ: RIMM) (TSE: RIM) today announced a new line of embedded radio modems at the Personal Communications Showcase (PCS) show in New Orleans. RIM's new radio modems, designed for Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) customers, incorporate the same core RF technology and Intel386(TM) processor proven by RIM's BlackBerry(TM) and Inter(at)ctive(TM) Pager product lines.

RIM's OEM radio modems are embedded within a broad range of products that require wireless connectivity, including handheld devices, laptops, point-of-sale terminals, bank machines, billboards and other displays, monitoring and metering equipment, vending machines, GPS systems and automobiles.

RIM announced two new OEM radio modem models today supporting both industry-leading wide-area wireless data network protocols. The RIM 802D(TM) operates in the 800 MHz frequency range and is compatible with DataTAC wireless data networks. DataTAC networks are operated by American Mobile in the United States and Bell Mobility in Canada. The RIM 902M(TM) operates in the 900 MHz frequency range and is compatible with Mobitex wireless data networks. Mobitex networks are operated by BellSouth Wireless Data in the United States and Rogers Cantel (TSE: RCM.B) (NYSE: RCN) in Canada.

``The growth of the Internet coupled with the broad coverage supplied by our wireless data network partners is helping to drive demand for embedded wireless connectivity in a variety of products used for mobile computing and telemetry applications,' said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO of Research In Motion. ``Our new form factor, which is smaller than most business cards, will now meet tight space requirements for a broader range of these products.'

``Integrated wireless communications is a very important feature for Panasonic's Toughbook(TM) line of ruggedized notebook PC's, especially for applications such as dispatch, GPS tracking, data query and claims/order processing,' said Kevin Martin, Strategic Alliance Manager at Panasonic Personal Computer Corporation. ``RIM's historical leadership in RF performance, noise immunity and power management has helped us to deliver industry leading solutions to our customers.'

``The `Always On, Always Connected(TM)' characteristics of RIM's wireless modem are important requirements for next-generation PDA's to enable time-sensitive data applications such as wireless email and stock trading,' said Dr. Dong Hoon Shin, President and CEO of Korea-based JTEL Co., Ltd. ``The size, power management and performance specifications of RIM's new radio modem helped us to achieve the design goals for our upcoming CellVic Wireless PDA.'

The RIM 802D and 902M excel in several fundamental areas including size, transmit power, receiver sensitivity, output efficiency, noise immunity, power consumption, reliability and ease-of-integration. Key features include:

- Powerful development platform - incorporates high-performance digital
transceiver, Intel386(TM) processor and ample memory for application
code and file storage.

- Small and lightweight design - approximately 1.65' by 2.65' by

0.33'(thickness) and 1.23 oz.

- Powerful transmitter - can supply full 2W transmit power for enhanced

in-building and fringe-area usage.

- Efficient power management - standby power consumption drops to as low

as 0.2mA.

- High reliability - single board design ensures greater reliability,

especially in high vibration or rugged environments.

- High noise immunity - allows tighter integration in closer proximity to

other embedded electronics.

- Comprehensive developer support - complete developer program including
Integrator's Package, Software Developer's Kit (SDK) and technical
support from a team of experienced engineers assists developers to
reduce design and implementation timelines.

- Standard application development environment - Microsoft(R) Developer
Studio compatible SDK allows software engineers to quickly develop
custom applications that can run on the modem's internal Intel386
processor.

Sans I am speculating that they are closing in with someone big (OEM)to imbed the modems into phones ,cars or some other appliance to bring E-mail and web access to a larger base than the P>C market (outside of the blackberry). This is my humble opinion and it fits with the recent appointment to Cantels board and alliance with American Mobile. I'm thinking about buying again. Thoughts?
