Sometimes the gardening groups (Friends of Whatever) that care for historic site gardens hold things like "apple tastings" at their orchards in the autumn. I know that Filoli Gardens in CA does that. They do that at some of the ones up here too. Think they do it at Shelburne Farms in Vt. too if I'm not mistaken. Might be worth checking into places in your area... in fact, maybe I'll do that for the heck of it.

I've been having some fun of a different sort around here for the past couple of weeks. Chapters Books had a 20% off Members' Sale in late September, so I bought several books on tree, mushroom, insect, etc... identification (pricey books with lots of photos that I probably would just long for but not buy). The mushroom book is gorgeous..beautiful photos and good descriptions. Anyhow, last weekend I went out into our forest and in about 2 minutes found...dah dah!!.. a colony of about a dozen Amanita muscaria (Fly Agaric) in a pine grove -- spectacular things...about 10 inches across with bright yellow convex caps on tall stalks... but POISONOUS...also some Amanita virosa (Destroying Angel).. also poisonous as the name implies. Did find plenty of edible mushrooms such as Pine Boletes and Shaggy Manes, but that isn't the reason behind I.D.ing them. I know most wild plants, trees and flowers, but never had much of a handle on mushrooms other than about a half-dozen species. Have always enjoyed looking at them, but never knew too much about how to ID them until now. Went out and found a couple of new species today... yep..another poisonous one... Bet you're wondering just what kind of a place this is... Poison Mushroom Rancho...
