No they can't do that,
One a deal is made and it is material, then it gets announced... no waiting for options to expire (there will always be options for months down the road that are in play). You cannot delay or accelerate announcing news just to play the market or to protect a certain segment of investor. It's illegal and it's called market manipulation.

Go back and study the announcement of takovers etc. and you will find that they occur every trading day of the month. Even this morning I heard of a merger on CNBC..... and we're just 4 days until Friday.
