BroadBand Technologies and DiviCom accomplish first transmission of MPEG-2 encoded live video over FLX-2500 system

BroadBand and DiviCom Demonstrate ATM and MPEG Over Standard Phone Lines, Bringing Cost-Effective End-to-End Digital Video Solution to Customers
Research Triangle Park, NC and Milpitas, CA -- June 20, 1996 -- BroadBand Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:BBTK) and DiviCom Inc. today announced a significant enhancement in the transmission of MPEG-2 (Motion Pictures Expert Group) encoded ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) signal-based, live digital video. BroadBand and DiviCom have successfully transmitted MPEG-2, ATM signals via BroadBand's second-generation Fiber Loop Access (FLXø) 2500 System and DiviCom encoders and set-tops.
Today's announcement represents the culmination of efforts by the two companies begun in 1994 to provide consumers with access to low-cost, high-speed digital video on a platform that is compatible with leading industry standards. The cost-effective, easily deployed BroadBand-DiviCom solution brings switched digital broadband to consumers by using existing twisted pair phone lines to reach homes, and existing coax wiring inside homes.

In the transmission, which will be demonstrated at SuperComm '96 in booth #1194, a live video feed was sent in real time, to a DiviCom MPEG-2 encoding system, where it was encoded and then sent to an ATM switch. The encoded signal was routed through the ATM switch to BroadBand's FLX-2500 Shelf via industry standard SONET format. The FLX Shelf routed the video signal to a pair of optical fibers, which delivered the signal to an FLX Node placed in an optical network unit (ONU).

At the FLX Node, the signal was terminated and placed onto twisted pair copper cable using standard 16CAP/QPSK formats. The QPSK video transmitter/receiver (VTR) used Lucent Microelectronics' MBA chip set, which is currently available. From the VTR, the signal passed through twisted pair wire, a combiner, over coaxial cable, a splitter and finally into a DiviCom MPEG-2 set-top where it was decoded and displayed on a TV set. The current system can reach distances of 600 feet of twisted pair wire, and 120 feet of coaxial cable.

"By bringing together BroadBand's FLX fiber-to-the-curb platform combining ATM switching and transport and DiviCom's expertise in digital media compression, we have delivered on our promise to bring a cost effective end-to-end digital video solution to our customers, while our competitors have yet to develop initial technology offerings," said Salim A.L. Bhatia, president and CEO of BroadBand Technologies, Inc. "This accomplishment signals the further evolution of features offered only by the FLX-2500 platform -- features which will enable telephone companies to dominate the telecommunications services market on future proof full service networks right now."

"Until now, digital broadcasting through standard telephone lines could only be achieved from the use of products from fragmented suppliers offering diverse and incompatible products," said Nolan Daines, president and CEO of DiviCom Inc. "BroadBand and DiviCom are ushering in a new era for users, starting right now, with our end-to-end, integrated solution based upon proven products."

BroadBand's FLX-2500 System is currently being deployed by telecommunications companies. DiviCom encoders and set-top designs are also available now.

DiviCom develops and integrates products and systems that make digital video networking possible. Products include audio/video encoding and decoding systems and integration consulting and implementation services. Based on the MPEG-2 and DVB international standards, DiviCom's products enable digital video broadcasting over a variety of networks, including satellite, wireless, fiber, cable and twisted pair wiring. DiviCom can be reached by phone at 408/944-6700, by fax at 408/944-6705, or via the World Wide Web at divi.com.
