Paul, My understanding is that Pentium top speed limit is 200 Mhz, which has been reached. The MMX version will also have this speed limit. Therefor Pentium, including the MMX version, will be not competitive soon.

Intel is turning to PPro in order to achieve higher speeds in the Klamath, which will have MMX, and will also be optimized for 16 bits instruction. However, Klamath is not pin compatible with Pentium, so current Pentium owners will not have an easy upgrade path.

Cyrix M2 is designed to compete against Klamath, by providing MMX compatibility, and better execution of both 16 and 32 bits instructions. M2 also provides pin compatibility with Pentium and 6x86, thus a perfect upgrade path.

So who will have a better product? Cyrix of course.

Richard
