Chip Shortage After Taiwan Quake Worse Than Expected, FT Says


Tokyo, Oct. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Taiwanese semiconductor makers, which halted production after last month's earthquake damaged their production facilities, won't be able to resume shipments probably for another two to three months, the Financial Times said yesterday, citing unidentified Japanese industry executives and analysts. Japanese customers expect it will take as long as five months before Taiwanese chip output reaches pre- earthquake levels. Taiwanese suppliers had expected to resume production two to three weeks after the earthquake, which hit the island on Sept. 21.

The quake will shave as much as half a percent off Taiwan's economic growth this year, economists and the government have said.
