*** OT *** >> part of what has made Q go is just that they happened to be in the middle of the stream when the torrent came through

I'm surprised by that assessment, rudedog. It trivializes the work of two of the top scientists in the field of broadband communications (Dr.s Viterbi and Jacobs) who had a vision and spent over a decade developing, patenting, and marketing their discontinuous innovation, the cdma air interface. The cellular market was years into its Tornado phase before Qualcomm was able to overcome the deeply vested (tdma and gsm) interests that had blocked their entry through legal and cartel methods. To my estimation, Q's success is clearly based on technical merit, planning, and persistence.

What part of your "gut feel" test do they fail? I think that if you take the time to study their business model, which is based on their ipr, you may come to a different conclusion. You'll see a company poised for dell-like growth and msft-like margins.

Sorry to take up bandwidth on non-dell matters. I was cruising through the old neighborhood checking up on the gang when your comment caught my eye.

Best regards,
Frank
