I know when afterhours' trading was first getting off the ground, Island reported that only about one in twelve orders were being filled. That means eleven out of twelve investors were/are wasting their time/effort in placing an order (a very bad stat from an ECN's marketing viewpoint--it's not cost efficient when that many people walk away from your "store" empty-handed.). I think NITE's ad campaign, "Where the trade gets done" is serving a purpose in reminding investors of that. Plus, many of the OLBs are partnering with various ECNs...I don't think NITE wants to bankroll that--directly or indirectly.

One more thought -- as for NITE being a possible take-over candidate...I think Amer Express with their newly announced "free on-line trading" business model makes an excellent suitor for NITE. I can't think of a better way to recoup the cost of that "free" trade than in the difference of the bid/ask.
