PARIS, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Pegasus Telecom, a new Brazilian data communication service provider, has just selected Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) as its technology partner for the optical backbone of their network based on the latest DWDM and SDH combined technologies. The contract valued at USD 120 million (EUR 115 million) includes the supply of all equipment for the four phases of the project and the implementation of a turnkey network for the first two phases. The project will use 6,000 km of optical cables with 72 fibers (including the latest generation of Teralight(TM) fiber, developed by Alcatel for high-speed DWDM transmission). Laid along interstate highways linking the cities of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia and Porto Alegre, this network will enable data, voice and image traffic. The Pegasus DWDM/SDH infoway, which will offer transmission speeds from 100 to 400 Gbit/s, will be the first of its kind in the Brazilian telecommunications market. Jose Barbosa Mello, President of Pegasus Telecom, stated, "Our objective when selecting Alcatel as technology partner was to find a company that would add to our project the most modern solutions for our clients. We understand that the market will demand more and more quality products at low costs with high transmission capacity. Alcatel is today one of the most advanced companies in this industry, with a unique capacity to develop products designed toward the future of global telecommunications, where Internet will play an increasingly important role." Jean-Francois Fille, President of Alcatel Brazil, declared, "We are delighted to have been chosen by Pegasus. Our unique solution for combining DWDM and SDH on the same platform will result in higher efficiency, real time network monitoring and overall cost reduction. We are bringing to the Brazilian market state-of-the-art equipment and software for very high-speed data transmission and with a capacity ten times bigger than traditional infoways." The project will be deployed in four phases. The first phase will include the new connection between the states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, which will later be extended to Belo Horizonte. In 2000, the company plans to extend the network as far as Brasilia and Porto Alegre, passing by Curitiba, Florianopolis and other southern Brazilian cities. With this new success, Alcatel further consolidates its leading position in optical networking systems for both submarine and terrestrial networks.
Note to Editors: Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology increases the transmission capacity of the optic fibers. Different wavelengths allow transporting different signals (voice, data and video) at long distance, each one working independently. This also allows networking the different traffics according to the specific needs of the network. The DWDM can be directly integrated on the operators' existing networks.
