SANs - Vixel, Brocade

Storage Area Networks (SANs) have been so far looked as a network of Servers, Interconnect products (Hubs, Switches), RAID Array products and software that ties them all toghter. I feel that SANs are much more than that.

Highly sensitive data cannot be transmitted beyond the firewall (i.e. via Internet)due to fears of data interception by unauthorized sources. However specalized network may be created behind the firewall (i.e behind the server) for this purpose (i.e. via a SAN). Several software packages exist (they are marketed as DT solutions currently - that replicate data over remote sites via ATM and Fibre) that enable the creation of this private network - which I call the SANet. I belive that SANs will evolve to this. So where do the SAN players fit ?

To enable the SANet, one must first consolidate the servers. The cost per port of a switch will be always higher than that of a hub.For this type of consolidation, Hubs will likely be used. Vixel has obtained OEM mindshare in this market. The consolidated Servers (i.e servers connected to a hub), will then connect to switch(s) at the current production site that will then link up to other switch(s) at the target destination(s) of the SANet. The OEM mindshare for switches is firmly with Brocade. Modified DT software will then transmit data from target to destination sites and vice versa. Of course the transmission rate will be quite fast(100 MBPS using Fibre Channel). Most likely for Data Protection purposes, there will be Back up solutions consisting of tape libraries (aka STK), again consolidated via Hubs and then connected to switches.

Using such a network with associated software is much more cost effective than the implementation and the subsequent headaches of maintaining a private network via other means.

If one takes this view then the SANet, becomes the business to business internet in a sense. Vixel, BRCD etc become the "plumbing" solution providers such as CSCO for the Internet. SANs will be the network of choice for sensitive data transmissions for business to business transactions.
