I notice that Chambers has been very quiet about Nortel's OPTera. Nortel claims they have the technology which allows the optical layer to communicate with the switching and routing layer in optical networks. If this is correct and If Nortel can patent this technology, they could become a gorilla in the market for optical routing. They could take market share from Cisco, Tellabs and Lucent. The market seems to have recognized Nortel's lead over Lucent in optical networking. Cisco has a very limited presence in this sector even with their recent acquistion of Cerent. I have seen no other discussion of the possibility that Nortel is on its way to dominating optical routing because of a technology which others may not be able to copy.
