Sumitomo to sell U.S. firm's high-speed multimedia modem

Sumitomo Corp. will release this year modems capable of data throughput up to 8 megabits per second, under a licensing agreement with Amati Communications Corp. of the U.S., company sources said Monday.

The devices use asymmetric digital subscriber line technology, which pumps up data throughput over conventional copper phone lines to enable high-quality Internet access of enhanced multimedia data.

The trading firm hopes to sell modems both to individuals and to Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. A retail price is still to be determined, but Sumitomo expects to drop it to around 50,000 yen in 1998. "

I think the above confirms the Sumitomo/NTT connection.
