A T M I's EMOSYN SMART CARD UNIT ACCEPTED INTO EUROSMART
DANBURY, CT, USA and OXFORDSHIRE, UK -- October 11, 1999 -- Emosyn, the
fabless semiconductor division of A T M I, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATMI), has been
accepted into Eurosmart, the European Smart Card Industry Association committed
to expanding the worldwide acceptance of smart cards. Emosyn, with European
headquarters in the U.K., provides smart card integrated circuit (IC) devices.
Emosyn offers innovative solutions to the problems faced by smart card
manufacturers. Its Rania(tm) Rapid Development Environment is a radical new
approach to smart card programming that can help streamline development cycles
for smart card chips while allowing smart card developers to continually define,
refine, and enhance the code. The Sciron(tm) line of non-volatile memory chips
is available as secure or standard ICs. The Theseus(tm) family of
microcontrollers -- developed jointly with Swatch Group's EM Microelectronics in
Marin, Switzerland -- is expected to be available before year's end. The Theseus
family of ICs is designed to extend the envelope of existing technologies in
density, speed, power, and memory flexibility.
Eurosmart is an organization of companies that promotes the use of smart
card technology. A smart card is a computer chip on a credit card. Incorporating
similar logic, memory, and programming circuitry, these ICs are able to compute,
process, store, and recognize information in a secure, highly portable package.
Multifunctional ultra-low power circuit design and fabrication are regarded as
key strategic factors for success in this fast-growing market.
