You know, George, the destruction in Chechnya is of a completely different order than the destruction in Yugoslavia.
Personally, I did not support the bombing of Yugoslavia. Nevertheless, I have to say that the death of 1,500-2,500 civilians is simply not comparable to the number killed in the 1994-1996 Chechen conflict. There are no agreed-upon official totals; but according to the most modest estimates, some 40,000 non-combatant civilians were killed in that conflict. In this latest one, the figure is already over 700.
Under the circumstances, "making it up as you go along" is fraught with consequences far more horrific than was the case with Kosovo. |
