Westell Inc.'s CPE Business Unit Passes Shipment Milestone
DSL Business Unit Passes 20,000 Modem Shipment Milestone While Supporting DSL Service
AURORA, Ill., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Westell Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: WSTL - news), through its Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) Business Unit, announced today that it has achieved an important milestone, passing the 20,000 unit shipment mark of its WireSpeed(TM) Digital Subscriber (DSL) products.
Westell's WireSpeed modems and ADSL Routers share an existing office or home phone line to provide reliable, high-speed, Internet connection at downstream data rates of up to 8 Mbps and upstream data rates of up to 800 Kbps. WireSpeed modems are ''plug and play'' and require little user configuration. With Westell's WireSpeed ADSL Routers, multiple users can share a single Internet connection as well as dynamically select between multiple service providers or corporate LANs.
Westell's WireSpeed modems and WireSpeed ADSL Routers are software upgradeable to provide investment protection as network requirements evolve. The initial set of products, designed for full rate ADSL service will also incorporate the recently standardized ITU recommendations for G.Lite ADSL.
The WireSpeed products, utilizing DMT technology, are designed to be compatible with equipment using Alcatel Microelectronics' DynaMiTe(TM) ADSL chipsets. This will allow Westell WireSpeed modems and WireSpeed ADSL Routers to interoperate and function fully with Alcatel compatible network equipment deployed in the networks of Ameritech, Bell Atlantic, Bell South and SBC.
Westell has been providing DSL modems in support of DSL deployments around the Globe. DSL offerings provide high-speed data connections over copper phone lines while simultaneously allowing voice connections.
''We are showing strong success in our WireSpeed modems and DSL routers,'' stated Brian Henrichs, Vice President and General Manager of Westell's CPE business unit. ''Our strategy to target a niche that looks for powerful features and ease of use, seems to be right on track. Our products help to lower total system costs by virtue of their plug and play configurations, our software download capability and the fact that there is no need to 'crack a computer case' to get service up and running. We are also excited that our interoperability with Alcatel compatible network equipment opens up most of the major RBOC territories as potential target markets for WireSpeed products.''
Westell Inc.'s CPE business unit provides value-added end-points to the broadband network through multiple channels including through carriers, Internet Service Providers and e-commerce. Current products include WireSpeed Modems and DSL Routers and the soon to be released Communications Portal(TM). ...
