Nobody disputes that Reagan (and/or his handlers) pushed hard, spent hugely (to the point of leaving the U.S. a debtor nation), and took enormous risks with the Constitution in his determination to bring the Soviets to heel.

Of course the Soviet archives are critical in reaching a full assessment of the part played by Reagan. What has been released so far presents a picture of a Soviet elite far more focused on the spreading internal dysfunction of the regime than on the enlarging military thread from the U.S.

But we'll see.

I see that you are selecting a stone conservative spokesmodel, Dinesh D'Souza, as a stand in for a bone fide historian in addressing these matters. In terms of qualifications, he makes Garry Wills look like a titan.
