Techie,

They could make the inroads, but they have alot of catching up to do. Cascade(CSCC) has made their mint over the past two years getting in the door with their frame relay, SMDS, and now ATM products. Will they also have an ADSL product, or partner with someone who does??? They are a very good company, and now very well positioned. If so, they would be a tough nut to crack. I believe most RBOCS and IXCs have Cascade switches in place(at least for frame relay at this point in time), and if ADSL is to tie into something, I believe the local transport will be ATM. Cisco, is also working with a number of RBOCs for their ADSL trials (basically providing the backbone technology for collecting all of the ADSL drops and porting them to a high speed backbone). Whether they say so at this point or not, I have to believe that they realize the worldwide market potential with ADSL and will be doing more than providing the backbone technology to aggregate the ADSL pipes and carry them to the internet. If the potential for this market is as big as I believe it will be, I believe Cisco will get into the actual ADSL devices, just like they have done with ISDN(AS5200 and other single BRI devices). TO have a box in every home(or a fraction of homes) is a really big piece of pie that I dont believe Cisco can pass on.

To get telco business, you need to have more than a good box, you need to have one that the operations organizations can work with, and like. It generally takes time and resources to develope the particular interfaces that telcos like to see and manage. Also, enough cannot be said about relationships when it comes to this. As with most technologies, those vendors that have been around for a while with a working product bring a sense of comfort to those who are to make the decisions regarding a service that may have such a large impact on residential service.

Gotta go

John
