But she was a WOMAN of the genteel classes- and life was all about getting married- that is the whole point. If you didn't get married (as a woman) you had failed at life. You would be the bane of your parents existence and your siblings would all live in fear of which one of them would get saddled with you- or you could live the life of a governess or companion (with little hope of much to live on when you were old, and not much respect at any time)- the only option left open to women from good families.
