SAP sues TEKC (Teknowledge Corp) a small software company in Palo Alto to drop patent licensing demands from SAP. TEKC has a patent relating to heirarchial knowledge bases that was awarded in 1987 and is of the opinion that SAP is infringing upon it. TEKC has asked SAP for $2 million in licensing fees. SAP is fighting it and suing TEKC to drop the demand. No money is being asked for from TEKC. For TEKC, the worst case senario is having to drop the demand. Best case senario, the court finds SAP is infringing on the patent and has to pay up big time.Who knows, a small US company vs. a very large German company in a US court. TEKC had the same thing with Trilogy Development (parent co. of PCOR) a few yrs ago and Trilogy wound up settling with TEKC for $1.4 million. TEKC's situation is that they are a small NASDAQ company doing internet software (including e-commerce), profitable for 20 straight quarters, market cap $25 million, but no one knows them. Perhaps some of SAP's institutional investors might now be interested. This looks good for TEKC. Who know's it just might be in SAP's best interest to buy TEKC and own the patent. Then SAP can go after all the others that are infringing on it too.
