Actually Barrett said that shipments surprised Intel at new record levels.

The rub came in with lower margins which were the result of the .18 micron chip being delayed from introduction in 3rd Q to the end of this month.

These guys are far ahead of their competition but it still takes time to commercial quality new tech.

Interestingly enough the new .18 will be faster and have higher margins.

I think that is the HUGE significance for investors in the capital equipment stocks. The constant improvement of manufacturing techniques is the only sure way of maintaining historical margins (for chip makers ).This gives great credibility that the future for equip companies is healthy with: .18 migration,300mm wafers,and new substrates.JMHO
