Proxy Caches: Speeding Up the Web

From Data Communications magazine...

Tests show major improvements in
throughput and response time, but also
big differences in price and performance

Think globally, act locally: It's a simple
bumper-sticker sentiment, but it pretty much
describes the thinking behind proxy caches. Going
around the world to retrieve frequently requested
objects from the Web is an option, but isn't it better
to keep them close at hand? After all, it's faster
(since distances are cut down) and cheaper (since
those objects don't have to be hauled over expensive
WAN links).
