(OT) Just got off the phone with Merrill. Their new program, "Unlimited Advantage" offers the following; unlimited trading for $1500/year...billed quarterly ($375). There is no minimum to open an account, though above 150K the fee does decline. They'll do financial planning if you want it (free), offer a VISA signature card, give discounts on trust set-ups, long-term care plans. You can have trading accounts, IRA's etc...all trades in all accounts are covered by the $1500 annual fee.
In December they are introducing "ML Direct" an on-line trading plan to compete with Schwab, Datek etc. Minimum $20,000 to open this account. It makes sense if your commission exceed $1500/year. They also have an extensive "short" list. I was also told that execution reports and account updates are fast. But this can only be ascertained by opening an account and seeing if this is true...just like any other on-line firm. (Lee)
