John Kaiser, writing in the July-August Bottom-Fishing Report (Sept. 24), says
Altoro Gold remains his best pick in the platinum group for 1999. Mr. Kaiser
recommended the David O'Connor-Ross Beaty play (that also has the backing of
broker Rick Rule) in December, 1998, at 27 cents. At that time it was a gold
explorer with a focus on South America; it traded at 30 cents on Sept. 24. Altoro
led Mr. Kaiser's 1999 portfolio of 100 bottom fish in February, at 60 cents, and
reaffirmed his faith in the company on Feb. 26, when it had slumped to the
40-cent range. In the current report, Mr. Kaiser says Altoro lost some of its shine
after it spent half its treasury of $2-million on the Birch Lake platinum project and
failed to secure results good enough to justify further work. A recent financing by
insiders of a platinum-palladium project in Brazil, however, indicates management
has not changed its mind on exploring for platinum metals group. In December,
Mr. Kaiser reported that insiders held a strong 48-per-cent interest in the
