Give me a break! No way.

As a Brit who has spent some time in Poland and Scandinavia, I feel qualified to comment.

The underground economy in Eastern Europe is a natural consequence of
the centralised system failing to provide for the needs of it's customers. Indeed, it was encouraged (i.e tolerated) by the party.

A socialist state is defined more by the presence of an autocratic government machine, the availability of universal health care and (when Eastern Europe was communist) a guaranteed job.

America is almost anarchic by comparison.

Here in San Diego California, no-one gives a fig for what happens in Washington or Sacramento. The power is in City Hall. I imagine this is repeated throughout the US.
