Highlights of Latin American press

I've visited several LAmerican newspaper web sites listed here:
mountain-breeze.com

and run searches for Globalstar. With help from Alta Vista xlator, found this G* news from South of the border:

In Mexico, according to articles in the last couple of months from
economista.com.mx

Globalstar will invest 60M$ in Mexico. The head of Satmex and G* appears to be one person: Lauro Gonzalez. G* commercial service is scheduled to start there in January, with the Puebla GW "one of the first ten" in operation. They expect some 80K users (by an unspecified date-probably one year after start(?)).

The Economista also has a story on G* in Columbia, noting that TESAM is investing 30M$ there and plans to start service in March 2000, with the expectation of getting 20K users within first year, said to be 1% of present cellular subscribers.

In Costa Rica in July 99, according to La Nacion,
nacion.co.cr

Gobalstar America will start service in November and expects 2500 satellite phones within first year (article is not clear if this is within Nicaragua alone or all of Central America)

From Peru, some pre-Zenit articles in
elcomercioperu.com.pe
say that TESAM Peru expects 50K users within 5 years, and 2500 users after first year of operation. Also says that fixed service satellite calls will be priced at 0.65 to 0.80 USD/minute, and that 70,000 towns(!) in the interior are presently "incommunicado." TESAM said to be investing 30M$ in Peru, including the construction of a gateway in Lurin.
