Ruffian. Thinking about strategic moves and pressures on QCOM.
Which of these items, if any are untrue?
1)Lucent and Phillips entered into a JV to pool their resources for making consumer ptoducts but about a year ago Lucent sold their part of the JV to Motorola leaving MOT and Philips in the JV.
2) Philips purchased VLSI for the obvious reason of purchasing a captive source of CDMA ASICS.
3) QCOM pulled VLSI's ASIC license and are redegotiating it.
4) QCOM filed suit against MOT recently seeking to revoke MOT's ASIC/CDMA license
5) Traditionally QCOM has been having its ASICS fabbed by Intel and IBM
6) QCOM is moving at least one of its next generation ASICS to be made at Tiawan Simiconductor rather than Intel.
7) NOK just announced that a very large purchase of set top box processors had been won by Intel
8) Someone just posted a rumor that Intel wanted to buy DSP, a conpetent ASIC producer operation under license from QCOM.
9) Korean company Samsung claims to have developed its own internal version of a low end CDMA ASIC, thus no longer needing to purchase as many ASICS from QCOM. Korean CDMA phones will thus be even more competative.
10) QCOM recently announced a close alliance with Lucent to speed the completion of Lucent CDMA 2000 base station development and get them available for sale ASAP
11) MOT CDMA base stations have inferior and are being rapidly trashed out and replaced with those from other makers.
12) QCOM has found that supply and/or price for phone components makes the phone business unprofitable--and thus its phone division is for sale. Many of these parts come from Asian manufacturers. QCOM is trying to sell the phone division, but the sale is moving slowly.
13) Siemens just announced some type of telecommunications venture with NEC.

Just thinking, there are some points.
1) Lucent is the only natural allie that QCOM will find because their product lines supplement.
2) MOT makes inferior products and is in a war with QCOM.
3) Both MOT and Phillips and Samsung are trying hard to do a vertical integration which includes ASICS. Samsung has done this to some extent.
4) QCOM's best defense may be execution to develop advanced asics and implenent internet and CDMA2000 ASAP.
