I had archaeological ambitions until I actually visited and worked on a dig,

How was that? I was in Bolivia last year and was amazed that the Tihuauacan (?) civilization, which was very advanced btw and produced the Kon Tiki stille that Thor Heyerdahl named his vessel after. Anyway the Tihuauacan's had pyramids full of treasures and artifacts many of which have never been unearthed by the Bolivian government. You can just go there and start digging and see what you find. Of course if you really came upon a treasure, I doubt a tourist could remove it from Bolivia.
