...would be a fair indication that MSFT just entered the bidding for the handset division. I believe that this would be a further indication that MSFT is trying to position itself with QCOM as they did with Wireless Knowledge.

First thought: That's ridiculous. Softie doesn't want to put telephones together - they're not a manufacturer. They'd never be interested in this kind of thing.

Second thought: Hold it...didn't I just read somewhere that if Microsoft's Consumer Products division (the one that makes all those mice, joysticks, and keyboards) was spun off as a separate company, it would rank in the top 15 computer product manufacturers in the world? Might have the numbers wrong, and I know that MSFT doesn't actually own the plants that make the stuff (I think it's all contracted out to Asia), but it does give one food for thought.

Any guesses as to what a Bloomberg headline like this would do to the stock price: <vVbg>

Redmond, WA, Oct 19th (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corporation today announced that it will purchase the mobile phone manufacturing division of Qualcomm, Inc, for $1.1B, and also plans to expand its existing partnership with the San Diego-based company to jointly develop a series of 'next generation' wireless products based on the CDMA standard.

Well, hey, on a day like today it's ok to console ourselves with a little wishful thinking, ok?
