A really intelligent post. I think you may underestimate the pervasiveness and danger of sexism in many families. I think male domination -- not necessarily accompanied by brutality -- is present in perhaps half of the families. I think male brutality might be about 10-15% -- just guessing, based on abuse and divorce figures.
