Lola, the best stock set up for US people I have been able to find is Greenline which is Price Waterhouse. The maximum commissions are $49 canadian plus 2% of principle - and they let you keep all your money in canadian, so you are not always switching back and forth which costs who knows how much? I am praying that online trading for US is not too far in the future.
