Weekly Jobless Claims = -29k to 285k

In the week ending Oct. 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 285,000, a decrease of 29,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 314,000. The 4-week moving average was 293,750, a decrease of 750 from the previous week's revised average of 294,500.

Retail Sales for September = +0.1%

The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that advance estimates of U.S. retail sales for September adjusted for seasonal, holiday, and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $253.4 billion, an increase of 0.1 percent (±0.7%) from the previous month and up 10.5 percent (±0.9%) from September 1998. Total sales for the July through September period were up 10.3 percent (±0.7%) from the same period a year ago. The July to August 1999 percent change was revised from +1.2 percent (±0.7%) to +1.5 percent (±0.3%).
