ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 9, 1997--Ascend Communications, Inc., (NASDAQ: ASND) today announced that Network Magazine, formerly LAN Magazine, has awarded Product of the Year in the enterprise router category to Ascend's GRF 400 high-performance IP switch. The award will be highlighted in the May 1997 issue of the magazine.
"We're extremely pleased the GRF 400 has received Network Magazine's Product of the Year award, which is regarded as one of the more credible awards in the industry," said Mark Garver, General Manager and Vice President of Ascend's High Performance Networking Division. "This affirms the GRF 400 as the premium solution available for Carrier and Internet backbone congestion."
When bestowing awards, Network Magazine looks for products that solve new problems and make a significant impact on its readers' networks. "These awards recognize the best of the best - products that our readers have sworn by," said Alan Zeichick, editor-in-chief of Network Magazine. "The GRF 400 is significant because it ratchets the Internet up to the next notch and offers room to grow. It's a high-capacity, high-performance switch designed for large backbones, peering centers and MegaPops that makes users more productive by making the Internet work faster."
The GRF 400 employs a unique combination of scalable switching, route management, and high-speed distributed IP forwarding to attain unprecedented speeds -- up to 2.8 million packets per seconds. In its evaluation of the GRF 400, Network World singled out two GRF design innovations for special comment. "We liked the fact that the GRF doesn't have routing table caches," said Zeichick. "This avoids the problem of frequent cache misses, each requiring a full software-based route table lookup using shared resources, which can lead to route flapping. We were also impressed by its IP forwarding media cards, which perform hardware-assisted lookup at switching speeds."
The Product of the Year winners must have been introduced or substantively enhanced during Calendar Year 1997; the editors verify that the product actually shipped in 1997. Unlike the awards associated with many other technical publications, vendor input into Network Magazine's Product of the Year nomination or selection process was not allowed, making this, as Network Magazine said, truly an award that indicates product technical excellence.
