CPQ warned today of component shortages as the result of the Taiwan earthquake. If Taiwan were the real reason for disappointing Q3 results, the announcement would have come earlier. I conclude that this is a pre-announcement softening.

Meanwhile, Andy Neff, Senior Managing Director of Bear Stearns, spoke this morning on CNBC. He downplays the CPQ shortage because CPQ, DELL, and IBM have greater leverage over their suppliers than do their second-tier competitors.

Again, if CPQ is warning about component supply, and Andy Neff isn't worried (about component supply) CPQ is positioning for their announcement later this month.
