SDLI sells to Alcatel, Lucent, Nortel, Tyco, Ciena, Corning, Pirelli, and on down the list. They have an exclusive with Alcatel.
As for acquisitions, SDL is more likely to acquire than be acquired.
Holding up well today against the tide.
I'll add one more thought, received from the leader of an upcoming networking conference:
Consider a few facts about the growth of the infrastructure. Steve Alexander, the CTO of Ciena, believes that we can drive the capacity of fiber from today's 1 Terabits/sec to 10 Terabits /sec or more by increasing the number of WDM channels from 100 to 400 and the data rate from 10 Gbps to 40 Gbps. Fiber is going in everywhere, from the backbone to the last mile. According to Edward Davis, the CEO of PSINet, 4,000 miles of fiber are installed everyday. The total carrying capacity of fiber in the US alone has grown from 1.2 Tbps in 1996 to 21 Tbps now, and will top 100 Tbps in two years. In five years, we could have more than 10,000 Tbps of capacity in large central offices, says Tony Bates of Cisco.
