Some more thoughts on DSP:

Why did DSP sell out? They are in the hottest sector(wireless) and the hottest niche (CDMA). If things were that peachy, they would not sell. Also, the premium was not much. The 52 week high was $32. They get $36 in cash not Intel stock. I think there were troubled waters ahead for DSP. QCOM pace of innovation in 3G and HDR was just too much.

As to Intel grabbing CDMA ASIC marketshare, what part of that market can they get? Probably the low end, because DSP was already behind, and INTC has no inhouse expertise. For CDMA adoption, this is good. Someone needs to address the low end <G>. QCOM can then focus on the high end cool stuff, and collect royalties for low end.

So, after some more thought I think this is actually a big win for QCOM. Maybe some people disagree.

Intel and the graphics market
Intel was developing a graphics chip inhouse and then bought out Chips and Tech. This move was in the PC space where they have lot of leverage on the platform. But it still did not give them dominant share. In CDMA wireless, the chances are even more remote. They will have trouble growing the team to accelerate CDMA development. If I am a crack CDMA engineer looking for a job, would I want QCOM options or INTC options.
