In looking at the ATI users guide ;^) it says... (I have the 8mb version) The quality of the video that you can capture depends on the following conditions: Speed of your CPU Amount of system Ram Performance of your Hard disk Size of the video capture window Video Codec (encoder/decoder) used: YUV9 - Best Quality, most memory ATI VCR 1.0 - Requires Pentium 166 or faster, Dramatically reduced disk space requirements ATI VCD 2.0 - Uses on the fly compression to achieve 9:1 comp over YUV16. Requires MMX or Pentium 2. ----- It does not capture and compress to MPEG2. It captures AVI files using a low overhead Codec that doesn't compress nearly as well as MPEG2. They also have an MPEG capture, but I beleive it's MPEG1 and it requires a P3 to do anything but I-Frame only compression. The quality is about what you get off the internet. IMO it's a bit less than VHS, and boy does it fill up your harddisk. Needs more quality compression to be truely useful as a DVR. Needs a DVxplore ;-)
