Wafer-Pricing War Rages In Taiwan - good news for Cube?
(04/08/97; 10:00 a.m. EST)
By Mark LaPedus , Electronic Buyers' News

Prices for silicon wafers among several Taiwan IC foundries have hit
their lowest levels ever, according to industry managers.

Following a 3-month-old price war between two Taiwan foundry
companies -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. and
United Microelectronics Corp. -- the average price of a 6-inch wafer
has dropped by about 50 percent to $300 since the beginning of the
year, according to local sources.

Analysts said they also believe 8-inch wafer prices among foundry
companies will drop by about 30 percent this year. IC makers will
benefit by this trend, but it spells trouble for the highly profitable wafer foundry business, according to analysts.
