hi savolainen-

<..doesn't look to me at first glance that this patent would be particularly applicable to the full-rate splitterless announcement today.. any thoughts?...>

talking to some engineers, they agree. this seems to be more of an ATM-related technique for skipping some buffering steps.

<..in general, am inclined to agree with orct that ala's patent suit "is an attempt to disrupt Orckit's position in the marketplace, rather than a genuine interest in protecting their intellectual property."..>

again you seem to be on the same track as some industry speculation.
first, why is it that no one else got noticed by ALA (when purportedly others might have also been)? Why go after ORCT?

let's see - ALA has BEL. ORCT has GTE. GTE is purportedly rumored to be going out for a 2nd DSLAM round soon. BEL and GTE are soon to be joined. hmmmm...... any obvious politics? <g>

but who knows? and then why joint announce splitterless full rate? weird politics for sure.
