I would have to say that VECO has always done an excellent job of choosing acquisitions, and an excellent job of integrating them after acquisition. They have rarely underpaid for anything, however, and as a consequence the stock has not risen over the years.

The only acquisition that I question in retrospect was Digital Instruments. Not that Digital wasn't a good company, but rather that acquiring Digital cost them distributorship of the IBM AFM, so while Digital brought sales, they also lost some they already had. On the other hand the cumulative result of all the acquisitions is a bigger company, but a constant stock price and no higher EPS.
