Gary,

indeed wireless infrastructure is currently overwhelmingly voice. Data represents only a tiny fraction of the infrastructure. However, everybody says that within a few years most of the cellular information traffic will be data rather than voice. So the opportunity is huge. Wireless (both CDMA and non-CDMA) will convert to 3G in a few years primarily because of 3G's data capability. 3G is CDMA-based. 3Com announced a couple of days ago its plans for 3G data gateways that among other things featured easy migration of its existing CDMA data gateways to 3G. It was a clear message to CDMA cellular operators to buy 3Com's data gateways now with the assurance that they can easily upgrade to 3G later.

IMO, this announcement was even more important than the Nokia-Palm announcement. But the market ignored it -- I suppose few people understand the nuances of cellular voice/data infrastructure.
