That does seem to be the most likely explanation. I recently read about an old woman who was dead for three years before they found her. Her husband had died, and the neighbors thought she was going to an old folk's home, so when they didn't see her, they didn't wonder. I guess it's not a bad way to go, but it does seem eerie.
