But, what I'm wondering about is Hitachi's $65 billion in annual sales. They make cell phones?

They aren't that big, more like high 30's billions of dollars revenues per year. They are a super-integrated company both vertically and horizontally...chips to mainframes to TVs, stereo, phones, etc., etc.
